...Look, I didn't mean anything by, by that, either. Everyone's a different person to how they used to be, otherwise you wouldn't grow up... And you've grown up a lot. I don't think that's a weird thing to say.

[No weirder than any other wishy-washy bullshit he doesn't normally talk about, definitely.]

[He tilts his head.] So what's the big deal? [Honest question.]

[Yet more sighing. Calmly-] Dude, I've had people puttin' me down my whole life. When I was a kid... when I was a kid properly... all I ever heard was people givin' me shit for who and what I was. Tellin' me I was weird or I was doin' things wrong or I didn't belong around 'em.

It hurt, then. Now?

It just ... gets kinda old.

[This wave of his hand is meant to be pacifying rather than just dismissive, but who knows?] Come on, you know I don't think any of that...

[He thinks for a moment longer. "Old", huh? Maybe that strikes a different note to him than it does to Kanji, but he hears it all the same.]

[He shrugs a bit. Old habits die hard.]

Right? And you've gotten over worse, so you'll get over that, too.

[The finality weighs a little heavy in his otherwise light-hearted tone: yep, that's enough mushy crap for today. Unless Kanji intends to beat it out of him, which he wouldn't be entirely surprised by.]

Anyway, whatcha gonna do now? You gonna hold onto all of that kiddie art junk Souji brought in, or do you need some help cleaning up?

[A moment, and Kanji gives a resolute nod back. Mushy stuff done, but it's good to get it out of his system. (Perhaps part of his brain's not caught back up to his real age...)]

Eh, I'm gonna have to go through it, I think. Some'a it might be useful, but most of it ... I dunno. I might give it away to the local kids.

Whoa, really? [He tries not to sound too excited, but his success is questionable - at least until he adds:] Do you mean that, or is that an excuse to try and pet it again?

[At this point, a stray thought makes him flush ever so slightly.] Oh, crap, what if they - ooookay, Kanji, promise me you won't bring that one to headquarters if you can help it. All right? I don't think I could convince this guy to leave you alone if I tried.

[He runs a hand through the side of his hair, looking honestly worried.] Oh man, I never even thought about it before... How the heck could you tell?
